Bridle Path HomesSet behind ornamented wrought iron gates and beneath towering canopies, lay some of the grandest Toronto homes, here in The Bridle Path. Every superlative equating to “large and luxurious” is appropriately applied to homes in the Bridle Path. Multi-acre estate lots, backyard tennis courts, indoor pools and the finest building materials and decorative details are de rigueur. Of course, the homes are immense. While viewing some of the less modest 10,000-20,000 square foot mansions, I have contemplated whether it might be appropriate to divide even the coach houses into wings. |
Ultra-luxury condominiums at One Post Road greet you as you enter the community. Their French Chateau design is reflective of many homes in the Bridle Path. |
Bridle Path Home Designs
Though upscale luxuries are common throughout, the architectural styles of Bridle Path homes vary significantly. The variation is reflective of the changing fashions of architectural design, and individual tastes of homeowners who have custom built their homes, throughout the community’s development of the last eighty years. House styles range from stunning avant-garde creations sculpted extensively from glass, to curiously sprawling “bunker-bungalows.” The most common design themes in The Bridle Path are the use of stately columns for supporting vaulted entranceways, and the modeling of residences as modern interpretations of elegant French chateaus. Discount Bridle Path Homes?!?
The Bridle Path is oft described as the ostentatious playground of the nouveau riche, usually in comparison to “old money” Toronto neighbourhoods like Rosedale and Forest Hill. My perspective is somewhat different. Though The Bridle Path features the most expensive (i.e. $10+
million) homes in Toronto, many Bridle Path homes in the $1-3 million range provide excellent value in terms of square footage, lot size, and age of construction when compared to these other upscale Toronto neighbourhoods.
In addition, although most lack the sprawling acreage found in equivalently priced rural subdivisions (e.g. Aurora, Caledon), the lot sizes in The Bridle Path are ample enough to convey the prestige of a true estate home, without subjecting the homeowner to long commutes into the city.
Though I highly doubt that The Bridle Path will ever derive the moniker of “Toronto’s Discount Luxury Community”, I believe there is potential for The Bridle Path’s reputation to find a greater foundation based on its superb features and comparative good value.
Bridle Path Real Estate Boundaries
The Bridle Path neighbourhood consists of Park Lane Circle, High Point Road, The Bridle Path, and the connecting streets south of Lawrence Avenue East down to Sunnybrook Park. The eastern boundary blurs as you approach Leslie Street; real estate listings for residences on Banbury Road and other streets directly north of Edwards Gardens often refer to these as Bridle Path homes. Though technically part of Windfields, many Banbury homes have the presence of, and similar design characteristics to, the neighbouring Bridle Path houses.
